Pasta and Cream Sauce

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

In bootcamp on Monday our nutrition discussion on restaurant foods sparked talk of pasta with cream sauce. When I was younger, cream sauce was definitely on the ‘no’ list. But as I’ve learned more about cooking, I’ve found some easy ways to make them a little healthier and easier to incorporate into my diet.

Bootcamp is back

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

It’s that time again! The Recess Bootcamp (now re-branded as “Health Immersion”) is back. I had such a great experience last year that I am doing it again — and this time I brought friends.
In that spirit, here are a few of the more interesting posts we did during the last series of bootcamps — [...]

Pizza!

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Trader Joe’s makes pre-prepped whole wheat pizza crust that makes this super easy. For those who can’t eat gluten, an easy modification is to use The Gluten-Free Pantry’s pizza crust mix. This is an awesome pizza, with chicken pepperoni and roma tomatoes.

The nutrition sessions we’ve had so far at bootcamp have stressed two things above all else: fruits/vegetables and dietary fiber.
According to the fitness assessment and personalized nutrition plan I got at the beginning of camp, I should be eating two servings of fruit and somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 servings of vegetables each day. [...]

Tealight holders make excellent rocks martini glasses

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Over the weekend the Blue Plate Fiancé went to Seattle to visit friends. I cooked some lovely halibut steaks.(sorry. No pictures.) We also made the pilgrimage to IKEA where I found these little tea light holders.
They are the perfect size for a little bit of hooch, or a tastefully crafted cocktail.

Incidentally, I’ve been buying the [...]

Countdown to Summer

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Summer is awesome. It’s my favorite time of year. This year, to get ready for it, I’m doing a nine-week, holistic fitness and nutrition “bootcamp” at Recess Fitness. The idea is pretty brilliant: 25-30 people participate in three sessions each week. It provides structured work-outs plus a sense of community and accountability, without the (often [...]

I relized this might be useful on its own, so I yanked it out of a previous post…
