Pizza Dough

How can you make pizza without pizza dough?

Ingredients

  • 1 packet of dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 100° to 110 °F - water should feel just barely warm to the touch)
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided into cups
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil

Equipment

  • 2 mixing bowls
  • wooden spoon
  • measuring cups
  • tea towel

How to

Dissolve the yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl, and let stand for 5 minutes.

Slowly add 1 cup of flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt to yeast mixture, stirring well until flour is completely incorporated.

Continue slowly adding two cups of flour, stirring well after each addition.

When dough comes together into a ball, turn it out onto a work surface lightly dusted with flour.

Knead dough for about 10 minutes until the dough is elastic, adding flour to prevent sticking.

Pour about a teaspoon of olive oil into a bowl. Form the dough into a ball, and roll gently in the olive oil to coat.

Cover bowl with a tea towel and let rise for about an hour.

Dough should double in size, pressing a finger into the dough should leave a dent when ready.

Gently punch dough down into bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.

Turn dough out onto floured work surface and prepare as needed.

Roll out into a 15″ circle for pizza, or divide in half for calzones.
